Improving postgraduate medical education

Aspiring to excellence, the final report of the independent inquiry into modernising medical careers is now available from the modernising medical careers website. Sir John Tooke calls for the creation of a new over-seeing body to standardise training and act as an interface between policy development and implementation. The report highlights eight areas of concern where action is required.

MIT Open Courseware

Harvard- MITOpenCourseware offers free course materials for a wide selection of their subjects incuding health science and technology . Over 1800 courses have been made available should you want to dip into to other topics. Visitng the website can provide you with free downloads of the lecture notes, presentations, reading lists and assignments.

JAMA online

2008 will see a great number of changes to the NHS electronic resources. The first of the changes to be introduced is the national purchase of the American Medical Association journals . This will provide Athens authenticated access to journals such as JAMA, Archives of Neurology and Archives of Ophthlmology. Unlike Proquest titles, there will be no embargo to accessing the articles and provides stable full text access to past issues. Please contact the Library for further details regarding NHS Athens or electronic journal access.

Quick access to favourite journals for NHS staff

MyJournals (TDNet) provides an A-Z list of journals available electronically to NHS staff. The list can be used to set table of content alerts as they become available. Adding alerts through MyJournals will also add the journal title to My Favourite Journals (accessible via NHS Athens login via the National Library for Health ). This list will allow you to quickly browse all the issues of your favourite journals from one page. The service will shortly be available where by you can select the RSS icon or 'add to MyLibrary' to add the table of content feed direct to My Update section of My Library . Please contact the library for further information of accessing electronic journals or keeping up to date using RSS feeds.

CKS updates

The National Library for Health's Clinical Knowledge Summaries (CKS) provide evidence based summaries and patient information on selected conditions. The following topics have recently been converted from the Prodigy format: Aphthous ulcer Conjunctivitis — allergic Cough — acute with chest signs in children Gout Immunizations — pneumococcal

In search of guidance?

New changes to the search interface for the National Library for Health (NLH), have now resulted in new search hubs being developed. By selecting the group title for Evidence Based Reviews or Guidance you will now find it easier to search more resources at once. Further developments on linking health information and searching the NLH will continue through to April next year.

Ebsco A-Z

Attention all Keele Students! Currently there is a problem with accessing journals through the Ebsco A-Z list. We are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible. All journals should still be accessible by logging into MyAthens ( http:// auth.athensams.net/my/ ) and checking under the journal provider. Most University journal subscriptions will be located under Science Direct and Blackwell Synergy . Please contact the library if you have any queries or problems.

Clinical Knowledge Summary Updates

Looking for the best in evidence-based summaries? The National Library for Health ’s Clinical Knowledge Summaries provide the information required to make evidence based-decisions. This months updates include Infertility , Lacerations , Meniere's disease , Otitis externa and Palliative cancer care — nausea & vomit . If you can’t find the condition you are searching for why not try searching DynaMed for additional resources.

Reviewing health care

Lord Darzi has recently published his interim report 'Our NHS, Our Future.' The review of the NHS is aimed at delivering better patient services including the reduction of waiting times and focus on improving outcomes in cancer and cardiovascular disease. Keele access to EndNote Web

Web of Science has now introduced a web-based version of the reference management package EndNote. This is accessible only to those with a Keele University Athens account. Current library-based courses will still focus around the Reference Manager service. Full training time table & online booking form is available from the Health Library website .

Problems with NHS Athens

Currently there is a nationwide problem with the adminstration of NHS Athens accounts. The adminstration site has been taken off line until all issues have been resolved. As a result any new accounts, reset passwords or account extensions created from the 25th Sept onwards may be lost. Please contact the library if you have any problems.

Introducing the Health Library

Hello and welcome, to all new and returning students. To help your orientation of the Health Library, we have compiled a short induction video available through the Library section of WebCT. This 7 minute induction is designed to give you the basic information regarding joining the Library, getting started with computers, and where to go for help. This has been designed as a quick overview and reference tool to compliment the Library induction session as part of your teaching programme. Please let us know what you think of it, and what other guides you would find useful to get you started.

NHS Databases are once again fully accessible

Apologies to all that have been experiencing problems with NHS Athens account of late. There appears to have been a problem between the databases and log in authentication system. The problem now appears to have been resolved. If the problem occurs again, please contact the Health Library with regards to alternative means of literature searching.

New look for NHS Athens

Athens has introduced a new look to their MyAthens pages. The changes now allow greater personalisation of the Athens resources. The new panel system enables you to hide or remove irrelevant information, then move the sections around the screen for improved navigation. You can now create quick links to your favourite Athens resources on your front page and receive current updates from some of the most popular news sites. Links to services provided by the Health Library, will now make it easier for you to obtain the information you need. The Help section provides further information on how to you can organise your display.

Cardiovascular Bulletin

The National Library for Health , provides a number of specialist libraries to keep you up to date with the latest information in your field. The Cardiovascular Library provides a monthly bulletin with the latest updates in guidance, systematic reviews, news and conferences. Click here to view the August issue.

Library training sessions

The Health Library has now opened up all it's training sessions to both NHS and Keele staff and students. Literature searching still remains split into two separate sections due to the differences in search interfaces for the two organisations (NHS- Dialog and Keele - Ebsco). Please check our new joint training page for further information or to book a session.

Getting published

Are you looking for some advise on how to get published? The Health Library web page has collected together some useful sites and advice for first time authors on how to decide where to submit your research paper. The Authorship section of Subject Resources brings together information on open access publishing, citation guides, judging journal quality and online reference management that can be shared with colleagues.

The E-books are back!

Keele will now be renewing their subscription to NetLibrary's e-books . The package has been subscribed to through a consortium, which provides improved purchasing power. The return around decision has been reached on the back of the consortium's decision to renew the subscription. E-books are the ideal reference tool. Text is readily searched without the hassle of checking indexes and flicking through pages. It allows access to books whenever it suits you, and is an easy way of obtaining books under popular demand without the wait or the restricted loan period. NHS Athens registration

If you are having problems setting up your NHS Athens account then why not follow the new step by step guide. The guide is located under the Athens menu on the Health Library website. If you have problems viewing the split screen guide, you may need to enable your web browser to accept the cookies. Instruction will be given at the top of the screen on how to do this.

NetLibrary not renewed

Keele students may be disappointed to learn that the University will not be renewing it's subscription to NetLibrary. NetLibrary provided access to a wide range of e-books, but the University wishes to be more selective to improve the quality of books made available. It is hoped that a number of new electronic books will be purchased from Coutts iLibrary, to be made available for the new term. For further information on e-books, please contact the Library.

Face lift for the NLH

The National Library for Health has now launched its latest innovations. Amongst the improvements is the new restructuring of Patient Resources area, for easier searching by topic, providing immediate access to patient information leaflets. Additional information is also now available to patients through the NHS Direct Online Health Encyclopaedia. For health professionals there is a new online medical dictionary, which accesses Black’s Medical Dictionary and The Royal Society of Medicine: Medicines. The tool section also provides a downloadable NLH toolbar to improve your searching and provide instruction on how to keep up to date with the latest research through RSS feeds. Looking for pictures and diagrams to include in you presentations; then why not check out the new Images section. Clinical Trials Portal

WHO have recently launched a new portal ( http://www.who.int/trialsearch/ ) to bring together quality information on clinical trials. Designed to improve transparency in research, and keep you up to date with current research. It pulls together 50,000 clinical trials provided by three registers (Britain, Australia/New Zealand and the US), combining published and unpublished work. All trials are required to meet quality checks prior to recruitment phase.
