eJournal Problems – Help for NHS Users

We are aware that there are on-going problems accessing the full-text of some of our NHS-subscribed ejournals. Until these issues are resolved please get in touch with the Health Library or email the details of your article to the eresources librarian at c.kent@keele.ac.uk and we will try to locate the full-text for you.  You can find more help on our eJournals for NHS Users information page. Spottingthe Sick Child is an interactive tool from the Department of Health, aimed at all healthcare practitioners and students as well. It will help you to learn how to assess an acutely sick child. The resources include real life cases, videos and test scenarios, as well as give you an introduction to the relevant national guidelines. You need to register to complete the activities and track your own progress.

50 Resources for Healthcare: 16. Care pathways from Map of Medicine

The Map of Medicine lists care pathways for a wide range of conditions and diseases. You can get information about diagnosis and assessment, treatment and referrals and on-going care. It includes primary care pathways as well as acute care pathways. You can also see the reference list that has been used to develop the care plan. The database also includes pathways from our local NHS organisations as well as general pathways and pathways from other NHS organisations. You will need your Athens username and password to access the Map of Medicine with all its full features. There is a freely available version, though you are still required to register. Updated & Improved Healthcare Resources page

The Healthcare Resources page for our NHS users has been updated to help you to find the type of information you need quickly. The resources are split up under a number of headings and new resources have been included: NICE Resources NICE have developed a new range of different resources: NHS Evidence is now called Evidence Search Clinical Knowledge Summaries Medicines Information and awareness service Evidence Updates NHS Athens Resources The links for the NHS Athens tools, such as ejournals, ebooks and databases have been improved. NHS Athens Help There is a new section where you can find links to all our Athens help resources such as the online guide and etutorial. Electives (Nursing, Midwifery and Medicine students) - no change in library loan rules.

If you are embarking on an elective in the next few weeks, to ensure you do not incur any fines it is advisable to return your books to the library before starting your placement. Students are welcome to continue to borrow items, but please be aware that normal requirements to renew items, and the possibility that items will be recalled or fines incurred for late return/renewal, will still apply.

50 Resources for Healthcare: 15. Search thousands of medical journals for the articles you need via Medline

Keele Libraries subscribe to the Medline database. It contains the details of thousands of articles including subject terms and abstracts as well as bibliographic details such as author, journal title and date of publication. You can search across thousands of medical-based journals for the subjects that you are interested in. There are lots of features to help you to focus your search, including: MeSH terms – medical subject headings Patient focus limits like patient age or gender Date limit feature to limit to the date range that you need Publication type selection – for example so that you can concentrate on reviews, controlled trials or case reports and so on Search history to allow you to view your previous searches Search combinations to combine your searches using AND or OR to increase the focus of your search or expand your search to include more elements You can also save your searches or email results to friends or fellow students. 50 Resources for Healthcare: 14. NHS users – get access to journal articles on your desktop

Our NHS users can access the full-text of a range of electronic journals. We subscribe to a number of ejournals on behalf of our NHS users. You can also access the NHS Core Content collection which is provided nationally to all NHS users by NICE / NHS Evidence. Sources of NHS-based eJournals To check whether you can access a particular journal title use the NHS Evidence My Journals list to search for the title you are interested in. You need to log in using your NHS Athens username and password to see the full list of your organisation’s subscriptions. Then enter the journal title into the search box and click search.
