Freely available Internet Resources for Healthcare

Of course there is a lot of information available via the Internet – perhaps too much? Is it good quality? If you feel a little overwhelmed we can start you off with a few good quality resources. Our Finding Information on the Internet etutorial will give you a few pointers to look out for and lists a number of resources that it is always worth checking. Our Literature Searching Sites web page gives you a pretty comprehensive list of some good quality information sources that might be useful during your studies and career. Whether you are searching for articles, trying to find reviews or looking for guidelines this is a good place to start.

Problems Registering with NHS Athens?

We have been made aware that some users have encountered errors when self-registering with NHS Athens via the online form . It would appear that the error is linked to the optional box “I agree to be contacted occasionally by NICE for surveys and research to improve NICE products”. Using Databases to Find Information

Databases hold bibliographic information about articles related to particular topics. They offer you a number of search tools to help you to find articles that match the topic you are looking for. We subscribe to a number of health-specific databases that can help you to focus your search and find the information you need effectively. Getting to grips with these resources can take a bit of time but it is worth it in the end. To get you started we have a number of short etutorials that you can try: Using Internurse Using Cinahl Using HDAS (NHS Healthcare databases) These will give you step-by-step instructions and include links to video demonstrations.

World COPD Day

19th November 2014 Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder or COPD, is a term that encompasses a number of differing conditions such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis.  It is one of the most common respiratory diseases and at present is thought there are as many as three million people living with the disease in the UK. Making the most of our Book Collection

Are you making the most of our book collection to find the information you need? We have a range of short etutorials to help you to get to the book you need quickly. Start by learning to use the catalogue to help you to find books on your topic or to get the book on your reading list. Our Find a Book on the Shelf etutorial helps you to use that shelfmark code to get to the book you want. Make sure that you are using books effectively to avoid wasting time – our Using a Book etutorial points you to the sections of a book to check to get to information quickly. And finally we know that many of our books are very popular and sometimes you have to wait until a copy becomes available; but why not try our online ebooks? World Diabetes Day

14th November 2014 Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas fails to produce insulin or the body has trouble processing the insulin the pancreas does produce.  Whilst the disease can be managed those that suffer from diabetes are at increased risk of developing a number of serious health issues.  It is estimated that the number of people living with diabetes will rise to 535 million. The mission of the International Diabetes Federation is to promote diabetes care, prevention and the development of a cure.  World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on the 14 th November.  It brings together millions of people across the world in order to promote the core aims of the International Diabetes Federation and raise awareness. App of the Month – the Health Library

Here is our App of the Month for November. Do you know that you can access your library account and search for books using your mobile devices? It is a bit complicated – you start with the Keele University app which has a section for the libraries. This will then also direct you to the Library Anywhere app and the Catalogue. For a quick step by step guide check the help page on our website . Remember, remember to renew your books

Remember to renew your books on time. It’s easy to do. You can renew any items you have by: bringing the items and your Library Card to the counter bringing just your Library Card to the counter telephoning us - at the Health Library, have your Library Card with you, during opening hours telephoning us - using the automated service, have your Library Card with you, available outside opening hours online - login to view your Library Account and renew your items You can renew your items as many times as you like, as long as no one else has requested it. If someone else has requested an item you have borrowed you need to return it to the library by the due date. Renew on time: avoid a fine.
